Canucks Acquire Veteran Forward

The Vancouver Canucks have acquired forward Brendan Gallagher from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for future considerations. The transaction was announced on Monday, marking a significant move for both clubs. Gallagher, a veteran player, will join the Canucks with one season remaining on his current contract.

Gallagher, who is 34, has one year left on a six-year, $39 million contract, which he signed with Montreal on October 14, 2020. This contract carries an average annual value of $6.5 million. Following the conclusion of the upcoming season, he is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent.

The Canadiens will retain 50 per cent of Gallagher’s salary as part of the trade agreement. This arrangement allows the Canucks to bring in a player of Gallagher’s calibre while managing salary cap considerations.

Gallagher’s Impact and History

Ryan Johnson, the general manager for the Canucks, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition. Johnson highlighted Gallagher’s qualities, stating, “Brendan is a quality individual and a very good hockey player.” He further emphasized Gallagher’s competitive spirit and leadership, noting, “We love the way he competes and leads by example.” The Canucks anticipate that the addition of experienced players like Gallagher will help establish a high standard for their younger team members.

Johnson also pointed out Gallagher’s connections to the Lower Mainland, indicating that the player’s desire to join the Canucks and his familiarity with Vancouver’s passionate hockey market were important factors in the acquisition. “This is an important acquisition for our hockey club,” Johnson concluded.

Gallagher was originally selected by Montreal 147th overall in the fifth round of the 2010 NHL Draft. He has spent the majority of his professional career with the Canadiens, participating in 911 regular-season games and 79 playoff games during his tenure.

Kent Hughes, the general manager of the Canadiens, issued a statement expressing gratitude for Gallagher’s contributions. Hughes acknowledged Gallagher’s 14-season career in Montreal, remarking, “Brendan will always hold a special place in the hearts of Canadiens fans.” He praised Gallagher’s determination, passion, and courage, describing him as a “warrior” who consistently prioritized the team’s success over individual achievements.

Hughes also noted Gallagher’s significant impact both on the ice and within the Montreal community, wishing him success in Vancouver. Gallagher’s last appearance for Montreal was on May 3 in Game 7 of the team’s first-round series against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was a healthy scratch for the remainder of Montreal’s playoff run, which saw them defeat the Buffalo Sabres in seven games before losing to the Carolina Hurricanes in the East Final.

Player’s Preference and Future Outlook

Gallagher possesses a modified no-trade clause, which provided him with some input regarding his destination as the Canadiens sought to manage his contract. While he had previously indicated a preference to remain in Montreal for the duration of his career, he had also expressed openness to returning to Vancouver if such an opportunity arose.

Throughout his 14 seasons, Gallagher recorded 246 goals and 241 assists. Beyond his offensive statistics, he was recognized for his grit, attitude, and leadership within the Canadiens’ locker room. Teammate Cole Caufield described Gallagher as “one of the most special humans, besides teammates, that I’ve ever got to play with.”

The acquisition of Gallagher is expected to bring a blend of experience and competitive drive to the Canucks roster for the upcoming season, with free agency commencing on Wednesday.
