Weekend Road Closures Expected in Toronto

Toronto residents and visitors should anticipate significant traffic disruptions this weekend due to multiple events, including the Supertri Toronto and the Toronto Chinatown Festival. These events will lead to extensive road closures across major thoroughfares, particularly on Sunday.

The Supertri Toronto, formerly known as the Toronto Triathlon Festival, is celebrating its 13th annual event. It is described as an iconic urban race experience in North America. The triathlon features a 1.5-kilometre swim at Ontario Place, a 40-kilometre bike ride on the Gardiner Expressway and Don Valley Parkway, and a 10-kilometre run along Lake Shore Boulevard West. This event previously served as a test for the 2015 Pan Am Games and is expected to draw over 1,750 athletes and more than 200 volunteers.

To ensure the safety of participants, spectators, and volunteers, temporary road and lane closures will be in effect around Exhibition Place. Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, consider alternative routes, and follow all posted detour signage and directions from police officers and event personnel.

Impact on Major Thoroughfares

Several key roads will experience closures on Sunday for the triathlon. The eastbound Gardiner Expressway will be closed from the Humber River to the Don Valley Parkway from 2 a.m. to 12 p.m. The northbound Don Valley Parkway will also be shut down from the Gardiner Expressway to Eglinton Avenue during the same period, from 2 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Portions of Lake Shore Boulevard West will also be affected. The westbound curb lane of Lake Shore Boulevard West, from New Brunswick Way to British Columbia Road, will be closed from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. Additionally, the eastbound curb lane of Lake Shore Boulevard West, from Ontario Drive to east of British Columbia Road, will be closed from 4 a.m. to 11 a.m.

In addition to the triathlon, the Toronto Chinatown Festival will also impact traffic. This festival will take place in the area of Spadina Avenue and Dundas Street West. Road closures for the festival will be in effect from midnight on Friday until midnight on Sunday on southbound Spadina Avenue, between Sullivan Street and St. Andrew Street. The festival runs on Saturday from noon to midnight and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Public Transit and Sports Team Schedules

Public transit users should also be aware of planned disruptions. On Sunday, Line 2 subway service will not be available between St. George and Broadview stations until 11 a.m. due to scheduled infrastructure maintenance. Shuttle buses will replace subway service between these stations.

GO Transit services will also see changes. On both Saturday and Sunday, GO buses will substitute for train service on the Kitchener Line between Stratford or Kitchener and Mount Pleasant GO stations. Furthermore, there will be no GO train service on the Barrie Line between Allandale Waterfront GO and Union Station throughout Saturday and Sunday.

For sports enthusiasts, all four major professional sports teams from Toronto will either be off or playing away from the city this weekend. The Blue Jays are in Boston for a three-game series against the Red Sox. The Argonauts and Toronto FC are scheduled to play on Saturday in Vancouver and Washington, D.C., respectively. The Tempo will have an eight-day break before their next game against the Minnesota Lynx in Minneapolis next Tuesday.

Police have advised motorists to consider alternative methods of transportation, noting that the TTC may also experience delays due to the events.
