The BC Lions faced a significant challenge early in their Friday night game against the Edmonton Elks when quarterback Nathan Rourke exited with an apparent injury. Rourke left the game after only two plays, following a sack by defensive lineman Noah Taylor. He was later observed with an ice pack on his non-throwing shoulder, and was ruled out for the remainder of the match.
At the time of his departure, Rourke had not completed any passes. Backup quarterback Chase Brice stepped in to replace him. The Lions, who are currently struggling with a 1-3 season record, sit in last place in the West Division.
Elks’ Defensive Performance Secures Victory
The Elks capitalized on the Lions’ early setback, with their defence playing a crucial role in securing a 19-17 victory. Edmonton’s defence forced four turnovers throughout the game, contributing significantly to their win. This included four interceptions, with Kenneth Logan Jr., J.J. Ross, Gavin Meyer, and Tyrell Ford each recording an interception. The Elks’ strong defensive showing also featured four sacks, two of which occurred during the Lions’ final drive.
One of the key defensive plays came before the five-minute mark of the game, shortly after Rourke’s exit. Brice’s arm was clipped on a pass, leading to an interception by Gavin Meyer, which set up a 38-yard field goal for the Elks. This contributed to Edmonton’s league-leading turnover total for the current season, which stands at 20.
The Elks’ kicker, Vincent Blanchard, was instrumental in their scoring, successfully converting four field goals. He connected from 38, 26, 26, and 16 yards. Quarterback Cody Fajardo managed the game effectively, making an 11-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Luther and completing a 54-yard connection for his longest pass of the day.
Despite the Elks consistently moving the ball, they often settled for field goals on several drives. Blanchard’s consistent kicking helped Edmonton maintain their lead. After an interception by Tyrell Ford, Fajardo delivered a four-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Luther, reclaiming the lead for Edmonton midway through the second quarter. Another 54-yard passing play to Joshua Cephus led to a 26-yard Blanchard field goal, extending the Elks’ lead.
Brice was intercepted a third time by J.J. Ross, which resulted in another Blanchard field goal, ending the first half with Edmonton ahead 16-7. Blanchard added his fourth field goal from 16 yards out late in the third quarter.
Lions’ Comeback Attempt Falls Short
The Lions attempted a comeback, with Keon Hatcher making a 40-yard catch that set up a one-yard touchdown plunge by Zander Horvath. Early in the fourth quarter, Hatcher also made an 11-yard touchdown catch. The BC defence made a significant play by forcing a fumble, which was recovered by Matt Spatny on the Edmonton 19-yard line. This led to a 19-yard field goal by Sean Whyte, narrowing the Elks’ lead to 19-17.
However, Edmonton’s defence held firm, making a crucial stand to turn the ball over on downs with 41 seconds remaining, allowing them to run out the clock and secure their fifth win of the season. This victory moved the Elks into sole possession of first place in the West Division with a 5-1 record. The Lions, with their 1-4 record, remain in last place in the West. Their lone win this season was a 36-24 victory against Edmonton on July 4 in Kelowna, B.C.
Looking ahead, the Lions are scheduled to host the Toronto Argonauts on Saturday, July 25.
