The B.C. Lions have received encouraging news regarding quarterback Nathan Rourke, who is anticipated to be sidelined for weeks rather than months due to a non-throwing shoulder injury. The injury occurred during the team’s recent 19-17 loss to the Edmonton Elks. Following an MRI, it has been confirmed that Rourke will not require surgery.
Ryan Rigmaiden, the general manager for the Lions, shared the update with media on Tuesday, stating, “It’s going to be weeks rather than months, and knowing Nate, it’ll be sooner rather than later.” He further emphasized that while a precise timeline in terms of weeks could not be provided, the outlook is positive, indicating a recovery period measured in weeks, not months.
Injury and Recovery Outlook
Rourke sustained the injury on the second play from scrimmage against the Edmonton Elks. Defensive lineman Noah Taylor was unblocked and sacked Rourke, leading to the incident. Although Rourke walked off the field under his own power, he later appeared on the sideline with his arm in a sling after receiving treatment for a left shoulder injury in the locker room.
The team’s general manager noted that managing Rourke’s pain will be a crucial aspect of his recovery. The Lions plan to closely monitor his condition to ensure the best possible decisions are made for all involved. Rigmaiden also commented on Rourke’s determination, describing him as a player who often needs to be protected from himself due to his eagerness to play.

In Rourke’s absence, Chase Brice took over as quarterback against Edmonton. Brice completed 20 of 34 passes for 226 yards, one touchdown, and four interceptions in the loss. Rigmaiden expressed confidence in Brice, highlighting his experience in the league and his strong performance during training camp.
To bolster their depth chart, the Lions have signed Tyrie Adams. Adams, who spent the previous four seasons with the Ottawa Redblacks, has experience in the team’s offensive system. He also contributed on the ground with seven rushes for 71 yards and a score. In 2025, he was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player, throwing for 5,290 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions, and rushing for 564 yards and 10 scores.
