Ovechkin’s Return and Contract Details

Alex Ovechkin has signed a new contract to return to the Washington Capitals for his 22nd NHL season. The deal, announced on July 2, allows Ovechkin to continue his career with the only NHL team he has played for. This decision follows months of anticipation regarding his future in the league.

The contract is an incentive-laden deal for one year. Ovechkin, who will be 41 years old on September 17, will receive a salary of $1 million. Additionally, the agreement includes potential bonuses totalling $8 million. This includes a $3.25 million signing bonus, with an additional $4.75 million payable if he participates in 10 games. The structure of this contract is designed to count only $4.25 million against the salary cap, which could assist the Capitals in assembling their roster.

Ovechkin expressed his enthusiasm about returning, stating he is healthy, enjoys playing hockey, and is eager to compete for a playoff spot and a chance to win. His return provides him with the opportunity to further extend his goal-scoring record.

Impact on the Capitals and League Records

Ovechkin’s decision to return comes after a season where he scored 32 goals. He is currently ahead of Wayne Gretzky‘s mark of 894 career goals. Ovechkin previously surpassed Gretzky’s record in April 2025, a moment referred to as the “GR8 Chase.”

His career achievements include holding NHL records for 331 power play goals and 141 game-winning goals. Ovechkin has also achieved 20 seasons with 30 or more goals, a feat shared with Hall of Famers Gordie Howe, Johnny Bucyk, and Teemu Selanne, who also reached this milestone at 40 years of age or older.

John Carlson, a teammate for over 16 seasons and a fellow Stanley Cup champion, indicated he was not surprised by Ovechkin’s choice. Carlson noted that he had a strong feeling Ovechkin was not ready to retire, praising his sustained performance and accomplishments in the league.

The Capitals missed the playoffs in the most recent season, but they have qualified 16 times over an 18-year period. This includes their 2018 Stanley Cup victory, where Ovechkin was named playoff MVP.

Roster Enhancements and Future Outlook

Ovechkin’s return is part of a broader strategy by the Capitals to strengthen their roster. The team has made several significant additions during the offseason, aiming for a meaningful season. General manager Chris Patrick has been active in targeting high-end players for the forward group.

One notable addition is Jordan Kyrou, a forward who previously scored 31 or more goals in three of his last four seasons with the St. Louis Blues. The Capitals hope Kyrou’s offensive skills and speed will be maximized under coach Spencer Carbery.

Another key acquisition is winger Alex Tuch, formerly of the Buffalo Sabres. Tuch is recognized as a well-rounded player capable of scoring goals without extensive power-play time. His signing addresses a need for the Capitals, who, despite ranking sixth in five-on-five goals per 60 last season, had a lower-than-expected scoring output.

Further bolstering the team, Patrick also signed third-liner Boone Jenner to a four-year deal worth $5.75 million annually, and defenseman Vincent Desharnais for four years at $4.2 million per year. Desharnais is described as a physical right-shot defenseman known for his defensive work.

These roster moves indicate the Capitals are committed to building a competitive team around Ovechkin. The team’s on-the-fly rebuild is largely complete, with a mix of established players and younger talent like Aliaksei Protas, Ilya Protas, Ryan Leonard, and Cole Hutson integrating into the lineup. Ovechkin’s family, including his wife Nastya and children Sergei and Ilya, spend their summers in Moscow, and are expected to settle in Russia after his playing career concludes.
