Seattle Seahawks Ownership Transition
The Seattle Seahawks are set to transition to new ownership, with the estate of Paul G. Allen announcing a formal sale agreement with an ownership group led by the Khosla family, including Vinod Khosla. This agreement will make the Khosla family the controlling owner of the NFL franchise. The transaction is still subject to approval from the NFL in the coming months.
Vinod Khosla expressed honour in their new role, stating, “We are honored to be entrusted as the next stewards of the Seattle Seahawks. We look forward to building on the winning legacy Paul Allen created and to earning the trust of the Seahawks organization and fans everywhere.” While the terms of the transaction were not officially disclosed by the estate, reports indicate the sale price for the defending Super Bowl champions is $9.612 billion.
The sale aligns with the wishes of the late team owner Paul Allen. The Seahawks confirmed the Khosla family will become the team’s controlling owner through a social media post. This significant sale follows the team’s recent success, having secured its second Super Bowl victory in franchise history.
Background of the Sale
The process for selling the team began on February 18, when Allen’s estate announced its intention to sell. Investment bank Allen & Company LLC and law firm Latham & Watkins managed the sales process, which was initially projected to extend through the offseason. The Khosla family will be required to divest its ownership stake in the San Francisco 49ers as part of this agreement.
NFL owners are expected to meet in August to ratify the final purchase agreement. The Seahawks have been under the ownership of the Allen family since 1997, when Paul Allen acquired the team for $194 million from then-owner Ken Behring. Allen played a crucial role in ensuring the team remained in Seattle, and it is anticipated that the team will continue to be based there after the sale is finalized.
The team currently holds a lease at Lumen Field that extends through 2032, with options for three additional 10-year extensions. Since Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, passed away in 2018, his sister, Jody Allen, has overseen both the Seahawks and the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers.

Recent Team Sales and Future Outlook
The sale of the Seahawks follows other recent significant transactions in professional sports. The Allen estate also agreed in September to sell the Trail Blazers to an investment group led by Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon. That deal, which will keep the Trail Blazers in Portland, is awaiting final approval from the NBA Board of Governors.
The most recent sale of an NFL team occurred in 2023, when a group led by Josh Harris, including Magic Johnson, purchased the Washington Commanders from Dan Snyder and his family for $6.05 billion. The reported $9.612 billion for the Seahawks would surpass this previous record.
The Seahawks recently defeated the New England Patriots with a score of 29-13 in the Super Bowl in February.
