By Noah Lavoie — 1 July 2026 — 3 min read

The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired forward Nick Paul from the Tampa Bay Lightning. The trade involves the Maple Leafs sending goaltender Dennis Hildeby, a fourth-round pick in 2027, and a third-round pick in 2028 to the Lightning. This transaction was announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Paul, a native of Mississauga, Ontario, is returning to play in his home province after spending four and a half seasons with the Lightning. During his time with Tampa Bay, Paul had a notable run, including two seasons with over goals and surpassing 40 points twice. He also contributed significantly in the post-season, scoring two goals against Toronto in the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, which helped secure Tampa Bay’s first-round victory.

Last season, Paul’s production saw a dip, with seven goals and eight assists for a total of 15 points in 51 games. This was attributed to injuries and being frequently deployed with checkers. Despite this, he is considered a valuable two-way player with a substantial frame, capable of playing on the left side or at centre, winning key draws, and assisting on the penalty kill. He has three years remaining on his contract with a $3.15-million average annual value (AAV).

Maple Leafs’ Off-Season Activity

The acquisition of Paul is part of a series of moves made by the Maple Leafs during Free Agent Frenzy. The team’s off-season has been marked by significant changes, including the signing of goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky to a three-year deal. This signing made Hildeby, who was also a goaltender, expendable for Toronto.

In addition to Paul and Bobrovsky, the Maple Leafs also reached free-agent deals with Colton Sissons, Teddy Blueger, and Jack Roslovic on Wednesday. The move to bring in Paul is seen as a way to add affordable depth scoring to the roster. His versatility and two-way ability are traits the Leafs sought to replace following the departures of Scott Laughton and Nic Roy.

The addition of Paul also provides the Maple Leafs with a surplus of players down the middle, which could allow them to make further moves if desired, especially given the high demand for centres across the league. Paul’s contract is considered a bargain at its current AAV, particularly if he remains healthy.

Hildeby’s Move to Tampa Bay

Dennis Hildeby, the goaltender traded to the Lightning, posted a .914 save percentage and a 2.80 goals-against average in 20 games with the Leafs last season. The Swedish netminder is considered an interesting prospect for Tampa Bay. His waiver eligibility this fall was a factor for the Maple Leafs, who were concerned about potentially losing him for no return, especially with Bobrovsky and Anthony Stolarz already under contract.

While Hildeby showed strong performance in spot duty for the Leafs, his AHL results were described as middling, and he reportedly lost the battle for the crease with the Toronto Marlies to Artur Akhtyamov during their Calder Cup run this spring. The trade could potentially benefit both teams, with the Lightning gaining cap flexibility and a goaltending prospect, and the Leafs acquiring a versatile forward.

This is not the first time the Maple Leafs and Lightning have engaged in a trade this off-season, as they previously completed a sign-and-trade deal for defenceman Darren Raddysh.
