By Noah Lavoie — 2 July 2026 — 3 min read

The Boston Celtics have traded Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers, marking a significant move in the NBA offseason. In exchange for Brown, the Celtics will receive Paul George along with multiple draft selections. This trade involves a player who was the 2024 NBA Finals MVP and a five-time All-Star.

The draft capital acquired by Boston reportedly includes two first-round picks and two second-round picks. One of the first-round picks is a 2028 selection that could convert to a more favourable swap for Boston, while the other is an unprotected 2031 first-round pick. The second-round picks are a 2028 selection (most favourable of GSW/OKC/MIL) and a 2030 selection (most favourable of WAS/POR/PHX).

The deal was initially reported by ESPN and later confirmed by The Boston Globe. This transaction is one of several high-profile player movements this offseason, which has also seen players like Giannis Antetokounmpo move from Milwaukee to Miami, and Kawhi Leonard and Brandon Ingram involved in a swap between the Toronto Raptors and Los Angeles Clippers.

Brown’s departure and impact

Brown’s departure ends a 10-year tenure with the Celtics, during which he was part of a successful duo with Jayson Tatum. Together, they helped lead the Celtics to the 2024 NBA title. Brown was the league’s fourth-leading scorer this past season, averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game. This increased workload came after Tatum missed much of the season recovering from an Achilles tear sustained during the 2025 playoffs.

Despite his individual performance, reports suggest that Brown may have felt undervalued, particularly after being included in trade discussions for Antetokounmpo. Brown himself noted on social media that the Celtics have won more combined regular-season and playoff games than any other team since he entered the league a decade ago, with 523 wins with him in the lineup.

In Philadelphia, Brown is expected to join a roster that includes guard Tyrese Maxey and centre Joel Embiid. Maxey was the league’s fifth-leading scorer last season, and Embiid is a two-time NBA scoring champion. This trio could form a potent offensive force for the 76ers, who are aiming for their first title since 1983.

The acquisition of Brown is seen as a move to strengthen the 76ers’ forward position, providing a player who can handle scoring responsibilities when Embiid is absent and offer strong perimeter defence. He could also serve as a secondary playmaker alongside Maxey.

George’s stint in Philadelphia

For George, the trade concludes a two-year period with the 76ers. He was traded to Philadelphia with two years remaining on a four-year, $212 million free-agent contract. During his time with the 76ers, George did not replicate his previous All-Star form, averaging 16.7 points in his two seasons with the team.

His tenure was also marked by a 25-game suspension last season for violating the league’s anti-drug program, which he attributed to mental health reasons. Additionally, his first year in Philadelphia was affected by knee and adductor injuries, limiting him to 41 games and resulting in one of his lowest scoring averages in a full season. He underwent surgery on his left knee in July and missed the first 12 games of the past season.

George is owed $54.1 million next season and has a player option for $56.6 million in 2027-28. His contract and injury history have led to questions regarding the value of the return for the Celtics in this trade. This move is the first major transaction under new 76ers team president Mike Gansey, who succeeded Daryl Morey.

The Celtics’ decision to trade Brown has been met with some scrutiny, especially given his recent performance and the team’s success. Some observers question whether swapping Brown for George, who is 36 years old and has a history of injuries, improves Boston’s playoff prospects. The Celtics did win 56 games last season despite Tatum’s limited availability and have added Mitchell Robinson this summer.

The Celtics’ president of basketball operations, Brad Stevens, has made several successful moves since taking on the role, but this particular trade has generated discussion regarding its impact on the team’s immediate title aspirations. The trade was agreed upon on Wednesday.

Canucks bolster roster with key signings

The Vancouver Canucks have made several additions to their roster, focusing on veteran leadership, experience, and organizational depth. These moves aim to shape the team for the upcoming 2026-27 season. Among the early signings, defenceman Luke Schenn is returning to Vancouver on a one-year contract. The team also secured forward Paul Cotter on a one-year deal, while forwards Akil Thomas and Trey Fix-Wolansky signed one-year, two-way contracts. Additionally, veteran defenceman Jamie Oleksiak joined the team on a two-year contract.

In a separate move, the Canucks traded Marcus Pettersson to the New York Rangers for a conditional first-round pick in the 2030 Draft. General Manager Ryan Johnson expressed satisfaction with the day’s events, highlighting his staff’s flexibility in seizing opportunities. Johnson emphasized a strategic approach throughout the process, focusing on player profiles and character, and prioritizing individuals who want to be in Vancouver.

Schenn’s return and veteran presence

Luke Schenn, a familiar face to Canucks fans, previously played for the team during the 2018-19 season and again from 2021-23. Schenn expressed his enthusiasm for returning, stating his commitment to the organization’s rebuild efforts. He has played in 1,122 NHL games, accumulating 212 points (45 goals, 167 assists) over a career. Schenn’s long tenure in the league has fostered a strong bond with General Manager Ryan Johnson, who was with the Utica Comets when Schenn was traded there in the 2018-19 season.

Schenn credits Johnson with playing a significant role in his return to the NHL, recalling Johnson’s support during his time with Utica. He also has a history with Head Coach Manny Malhotra, having played under him in Vancouver and Toronto when Malhotra was an assistant coach for both organizations. Schenn noted Malhotra’s preparedness in video analysis and communication skills, which players enjoyed. Schenn’s contract is valued at $2.25 million for the 2026-27 season. He has also won two Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021.

Last season, Schenn split his time between the Winnipeg Jets and Buffalo Sabres, recording one goal and six assists across 50 games. His career includes stints with 10 teams, such as the Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, Arizona Coyotes, Anaheim Ducks, and Nashville Predators.

New additions and organizational depth

Paul Cotter was the first signing announced by the Canucks on the opening day of free agency. The winger has NHL experience, with games played. During the last season with the New Jersey Devils, Cotter registered points, including goals, in games. Johnson highlighted Cotter’s speed, size, physical play, and scoring touch, believing there is still untapped potential in the player. Cotter’s contract is a one-year deal for $2.15 million and he also brings Stanley Cup-winning experience from his time with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023.

Akil Thomas, drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the second round of the 2018 NHL Draft, has played AHL games for the Ontario Reign and Springfield Thunderbirds, accumulating points. In NHL games for the Kings, Thomas recorded goals and assists. His contract is a two-way deal that will pay him $900,000 in the NHL and $375,000 in the minors. Thomas played in NHL regular-season games with the Kings in 2024-25.

Trey Fix-Wolansky was a seventh-round pick by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2018 NHL Draft. He played for Columbus’ AHL affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters, from 2019-25 and spent last season with the Hartford Wolfpack. With the Wolfpack, he tallied points in games, leading the team in goals and points. Fix-Wolansky played in NHL games for Columbus, registering goals and assists. His two-way contract will see him earn $900,000 in the NHL and $525,000 in the AHL.

Jamie Oleksiak, a defenceman, has played NHL games over a career, accumulating points (45 goals, assists). He spent time with the Seattle Kraken after being claimed in the 2021 expansion draft. Johnson emphasized the importance of depth to manage injuries and player movement, ensuring young players in Abbotsford are supported in their development.

By Noah Lavoie — 2 July 2026 — 3 min read

Oilers make significant roster changes

The Edmonton Oilers have traded defenceman Darnell Nurse to the San Jose Sharks, marking the end of his tenure with the Alberta capital team. This move was part of a series of transactions by General Manager Stan Bowman on Wednesday, the opening day of NHL free agency. In exchange for Nurse, the Oilers acquired Russian defenceman Shakir Mukhamadullin and college defenceman Zack Sharp from San Jose. A key aspect of the trade was that Edmonton did not retain any of Nurse’s salary, which was a priority for Bowman.

Nurse, who was drafted seventh overall by Edmonton in 2013, played in 798 regular-season games and 100 playoff games for the Oilers. He recorded 88 goals and 236 assists for 324 points in the regular season, along with 725 penalty minutes. In playoff appearances, he contributed 29 points, consisting of seven goals and 22 assists. Nurse had signed an eight-year, US$74-million contract with Edmonton in 2021.

The trade was facilitated by Nurse expanding his three-team trade list to include the Sharks, who were reportedly the only interested party willing to take on his contract without salary retention from the Oilers. This decision allowed Edmonton to free up significant cap space, potentially as much as $8 million, depending on the cost to renew Mukhamadullin’s contract.

New additions and re-signings

Following the trade, the Oilers quickly utilized the freed-up cap space to make several new signings and re-signings. They signed free-agent defenceman Ryan Shea to a five-year deal with an annual average value of $4 million. Shea, who had six goals and 29 assists in 80 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins, is expected to bolster the defensive lineup.

Edmonton also acquired depth goaltender Devon Levi in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres, sending a 2028 third-round pick to Buffalo in exchange for Levi and a 2028 seventh-round pick. Levi, once considered a top goalie prospect, played the past season with the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League. Bowman expressed optimism about Levi’s potential, stating he sees a lot of upside in his game.

In addition to these acquisitions, the Oilers re-signed several players. Winger Kasperi Kapanen signed a one-year deal with a cap hit of $2.6 million, and forward Max Jones re-signed at $850,000 per year. The team also added veteran depth winger Mathieu Joseph on a one-year, $1 million contract. Furthermore, goaltender Frederik Andersen was signed to a one-year contract worth $2.8 million. Andersen, a veteran of 13 NHL seasons, had a 3.05 goals-against average and an .874 save percentage in 35 regular-season games last season. He also contributed to a Stanley Cup championship with a 1.89 GAA and a .910 save percentage in 16 postseason games.

Impact and future outlook

General Manager Stan Bowman commented on the changes, acknowledging that while they traded a strong player in Nurse, the incoming defencemen, Mukhamadullin and Sharp, are expected to bring different elements to the team and provide a significant boost to the defence. He also confirmed that netminder Tristan Jarry would be returning next season.

At the close of the day, the Oilers had 21 players signed with just over $7.4 million in cap space remaining. This financial flexibility provides Bowman with options, including potentially acquiring another goaltender with a higher pedigree to complement Jarry. The team believes they can achieve similar production by allocating approximately 60% of Nurse’s previous cap hit to other players.

Nurse reflected on his time in Edmonton, acknowledging that the high cap hit led to warranted criticisms of his play. He stated that he lives with each game and moment, learning and growing from them. He also noted that while some criticisms were warranted, others were not, and for various reasons, he became a focal point for discontent. Nurse leaves Edmonton having played in two Stanley Cup Finals with the Oilers.

The Sharks, in addition to acquiring Nurse, also added defenceman Jacob Trouba, forward Mason Marchment, and goalie Eric Comrie in free agency.

By Noah Lavoie — 1 July 2026 — 3 min read

Werenski addresses trade speculation

Zach Werenski, a defenceman for the Columbus Blue Jackets, has publicly stated his desire to remain with the team. In a statement released on Wednesday, Werenski addressed recent speculation regarding his future, describing reports of him wanting to leave as “blown out of proportion.” He emphasized his commitment to the only NHL team he has played for.

Werenski clarified his position, stating, “I want to win and I want to do that in Columbus.” He further explained that after discussions with his wife and family, they wish to stay in Columbus, which has been his home for the past 10 years. He expressed pride in being a Blue Jacket and appreciation for the team’s fans, teammates, and coaches.

Future with the Blue Jackets

The defenceman indicated he is focused on helping the team return to the playoffs and compete for a Stanley Cup. He noted that he and “Don” (presumably a team official) are “completely aligned” on this goal and are enthusiastic about the team’s prospects. This statement comes amidst various discussions and predictions surrounding the NHL off-season.

Rumours had circulated on Tuesday night suggesting that Werenski’s camp was upset with recent developments, potentially leading to the rejection of all trade possibilities. One report indicated that this sentiment might have influenced a situation involving Dallas. However, it was suggested that such reactions could be short-term rather than indicative of a long-term outcome.

Several teams were mentioned in connection with Werenski, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, who were expected to pursue him. The proximity of Toronto to Werenski and his wife Odette’s roots was cited as a potential reason for his consideration of the Maple Leafs. The Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers were also noted as teams that might show interest, with the Panthers potentially offering a player from their roster.

Despite the widespread interest, Werenski’s statement reinforces his dedication to Columbus. Other players and their contract situations are also being discussed across the league. For instance, Connor Hellebuyck has been linked to Buffalo, though a trade was not as close as previously thought. Sergei Bobrovsky, who had interest from Edmonton, is now being linked to Toronto, with his last ask of Florida reportedly being for three years and $21 million.

Other notable contract discussions include Bowen Byram, expected to sign Wednesday for around $12 million, and Nico Hischier, also expected to sign Wednesday for just under $12 million per year. Quinn Hughes is predicted to sign a three-year, $18 million deal sometime in July. Meanwhile, Rasmus Andersson is expected to remain with his current team.

The San Jose Sharks are reportedly in need of defencemen, with names like Ian Cole, Jamie Oleksiak, and Jacob Trouba being considered. Ryan Shea, who had a strong year, also garnered interest from the Lightning, who are also monitoring Werenski and John Carlson if Carlson does not sign in Carolina. The off-season continues to be a period of significant activity and decisions for many players and teams across the NHL.

By Noah Lavoie — 1 July 2026 — 3 min read

The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired forward Nick Paul from the Tampa Bay Lightning. The trade involves the Maple Leafs sending goaltender Dennis Hildeby, a fourth-round pick in 2027, and a third-round pick in 2028 to the Lightning. This transaction was announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Paul, a native of Mississauga, Ontario, is returning to play in his home province after spending four and a half seasons with the Lightning. During his time with Tampa Bay, Paul had a notable run, including two seasons with over goals and surpassing 40 points twice. He also contributed significantly in the post-season, scoring two goals against Toronto in the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, which helped secure Tampa Bay’s first-round victory.

Last season, Paul’s production saw a dip, with seven goals and eight assists for a total of 15 points in 51 games. This was attributed to injuries and being frequently deployed with checkers. Despite this, he is considered a valuable two-way player with a substantial frame, capable of playing on the left side or at centre, winning key draws, and assisting on the penalty kill. He has three years remaining on his contract with a $3.15-million average annual value (AAV).

Maple Leafs’ Off-Season Activity

The acquisition of Paul is part of a series of moves made by the Maple Leafs during Free Agent Frenzy. The team’s off-season has been marked by significant changes, including the signing of goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky to a three-year deal. This signing made Hildeby, who was also a goaltender, expendable for Toronto.

In addition to Paul and Bobrovsky, the Maple Leafs also reached free-agent deals with Colton Sissons, Teddy Blueger, and Jack Roslovic on Wednesday. The move to bring in Paul is seen as a way to add affordable depth scoring to the roster. His versatility and two-way ability are traits the Leafs sought to replace following the departures of Scott Laughton and Nic Roy.

The addition of Paul also provides the Maple Leafs with a surplus of players down the middle, which could allow them to make further moves if desired, especially given the high demand for centres across the league. Paul’s contract is considered a bargain at its current AAV, particularly if he remains healthy.

Hildeby’s Move to Tampa Bay

Dennis Hildeby, the goaltender traded to the Lightning, posted a .914 save percentage and a 2.80 goals-against average in 20 games with the Leafs last season. The Swedish netminder is considered an interesting prospect for Tampa Bay. His waiver eligibility this fall was a factor for the Maple Leafs, who were concerned about potentially losing him for no return, especially with Bobrovsky and Anthony Stolarz already under contract.

While Hildeby showed strong performance in spot duty for the Leafs, his AHL results were described as middling, and he reportedly lost the battle for the crease with the Toronto Marlies to Artur Akhtyamov during their Calder Cup run this spring. The trade could potentially benefit both teams, with the Lightning gaining cap flexibility and a goaltending prospect, and the Leafs acquiring a versatile forward.

This is not the first time the Maple Leafs and Lightning have engaged in a trade this off-season, as they previously completed a sign-and-trade deal for defenceman Darren Raddysh.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been active in the free agency market, securing veteran goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky to a three-year contract. The deal for Bobrovsky is valued at $21 million, with an average annual value of $7 million. This move reunites a Stanley Cup-winning tandem in Toronto, addressing a key position for the team.

Bobrovsky, at 37 years old, joins the Maple Leafs after a season with the Florida Panthers where he posted a 27-23-1 record. His save percentage last season was .877, with a 3.07 goals-against average. He previously led the Panthers to consecutive Stanley Cup titles in 2024 and 2025. Bobrovsky is also a two-time Vezina Trophy winner, earning the award in 2013 and 2017.

John Chayka, the Maple Leafs’ general manager, expressed confidence in Bobrovsky’s ability in critical situations. He highlighted Bobrovsky’s experience, particularly in high-stakes games. Bobrovsky’s career includes time with the Philadelphia Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Panthers, where he accumulated a career record of 456-266-58. He has also represented his country at the Winter Olympic Games in 2014 and at the World Hockey Championship multiple times, including a gold medal in 2014.

Additional Player Acquisitions

Beyond the goaltending acquisition, the Maple Leafs also bolstered their forward lines with several signings. They signed forward Jack Roslovic to a two-year contract worth $8 million, carrying a cap hit of $4 million. Roslovic, a forward, recorded goals and points in games last season, adding an assist in playoff games. His career includes playing for the Winnipeg Jets, Blue Jackets, New York Rangers, and Carolina Hurricanes, with goals and points in career games.

Another forward, Colton Sissons, joined the team on a two-year, $8.5 million deal, with a cap hit of $4.25 million. Sissons, a forward, registered goals and points in games with the Vegas Golden Knights last season. He also contributed goals and points in playoff games before his team’s elimination in the Stanley Cup Final. Sissons’ career spans games with the Nashville Predators and Golden Knights, accumulating goals and points.

The Maple Leafs further strengthened their forward group by adding Teddy Blueger on a two-year, $5 million contract, featuring a $2.5 million average annual value. Blueger, a forward, recorded goals and assists over games in the 2025-26 season for the Vancouver Canucks. He has played career games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Golden Knights, and Canucks, tallying goals and assists. Blueger won a Stanley Cup with Vegas in 2023.

Trades and Roster Adjustments

In addition to the free agent signings, Toronto made several trades. The team acquired forward Nick Paul from the Tampa Bay Lightning. In exchange, the Lightning received goaltender Dennis Hildeby, a fourth-round pick in 2027, and a third-round pick in 2028. Paul, a forward, recorded goals and assists for points in games last season for the Lightning. He is a Mississauga, Ontario native.

The Maple Leafs also sent restricted free agent Nick Robertson to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a fourth-round pick. Robertson, a forward, had goals and points in games with the Maple Leafs last season. He played career games, scoring goals and points. Robertson had previously requested a trade from the club.

Further depth was added with the signing of forward Zack MacEwen to a two-year contract. MacEwen played in games last season for the New Jersey Devils. The team also signed Brandon Duhaime to a three-year contract worth $2.6 million.

The busy day for the Maple Leafs reflects a strategy to build a competitive and balanced team for the upcoming seasons. General Manager Chayka’s actions indicate a focus on making significant roster changes since his hiring on May 4.

By Noah Lavoie — 1 July 2026 — 3 min read

Zach Werenski, a defenceman for the Columbus Blue Jackets, has blocked a trade that would have sent him to the Dallas Stars. The Blue Jackets found a trade agreement they were willing to accept, only to have it blocked by Werenski. However, Werenski, who possesses a no-movement clause in his contract, declined the move.

According to reports, Werenski prefers to remain in the Eastern Conference, with the Tampa Bay Lightning or Toronto Maple Leafs identified as preferred destinations. This development follows a period of rapid change regarding Werenski’s future with the Blue Jackets. On June 23rd, it was reported that Werenski would meet with the Blue Jackets after the 2026 NHL Draft to discuss his future. Two days later, on the day of the draft, it was confirmed he would not sign an extension but would honour his existing contract.

Trade Discussions and Player Reactions

The swift progression to a trade agreement, and its subsequent blocking by Werenski, indicates a strained relationship between the player and the Columbus organization. Reports suggest that Werenski is upset with how the situation has been handled, particularly with the details of the proposed trade being leaked to the media. This has led to speculation that he may block any future trade attempts by Columbus.

Blue Jackets General Manager Don Waddell‘s summer has been significantly impacted by these events. The proposed package from the Stars was considered attractive by the Blue Jackets because it included Harley, who is beginning an eight-year contract extension. Harley, while not a direct replacement for Werenski, would have provided Columbus with a top-pairing defenceman.

The situation also affects the Stars, marking the second time recently that a significant trade agreement has encountered player resistance. Prior to the 2026 NHL Draft, the Stars had reportedly agreed to trade Jason Robertson to the Seattle Kraken, but Robertson rejected the idea of signing a long-term deal with Seattle. This proposed extension was for an eight-year term.

The current circumstances could lead to an awkward training camp for the Stars. While many believe Robertson prefers to stay with the Stars, he is now aware that the team has actively explored trading him. Similarly, Harley, who is set to begin an extension, now knows he was nearly part of a trade. The human element of these professional decisions is a factor to consider.

Uncertain Future for Werenski and Columbus

Werenski’s contract runs for two more seasons with Columbus. Initially, his intention was to return to the Blue Jackets if a suitable trade could not be found. However, with the situation now public and emotions running high, the path forward is unclear.

Blue Jackets coach Rick Bowness expressed surprise at the recent news regarding Werenski’s potential departure, noting that there was no mention of it during their end-of-season meetings. Bowness stated he would coach whoever is with the team in September.

The Blue Jackets are reportedly keen to resolve the situation quickly, but Waddell is not obligated to proceed at a pace dictated by Werenski and his agent, Judd Moldaver. The team needs a trade return for Werenski that includes players who can contribute immediately.

Werenski is coming off a season where he recorded 22 goals and 81 points in 75 games, and he also won Olympic gold with Team USA at the Milan Cortina Games in February.

Zach Werenski wins 2026 Norris Trophy, best defenseman in NHL Credit: nhl.com

The Blue Jackets’ general manager can now explore options with Toronto or Tampa Bay, despite the Stars having offered what was considered the most appealing package.

The agreed-upon trade with Dallas highlights the rapid deterioration of the relationship between Columbus and Werenski in a matter of days.

By Noah Lavoie — 1 July 2026 — 3 min read

James’ Free Agency Decision

LeBron James has announced his decision to enter free agency for the upcoming 2026-27 season, confirming he will not be returning to the Los Angeles Lakers. This marks the first time since July 2018 that James will not be playing for the Lakers. The announcement was made on Tuesday, just hours before the official start of free agency, and indicates that he plans to play for at least one more season.

The veteran player’s agent, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, is expected to hold meetings with interested NBA teams. James’ departure from the Lakers concludes a tenure that began in 2018 when he joined the team from the Cleveland Cavaliers. During his time with the Lakers, he led them to a championship in 2020 and earned his fourth NBA Finals MVP award. He also made history in February 2023 by surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the all-time leading scorer in NBA history. The Lakers reached the playoffs in all but two of his seasons with the team.

According to research, James is the only player in Lakers history to have maintained averages of 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists per game for more than five consecutive seasons, achieving these benchmarks in all eight of his seasons in Los Angeles.

Teams Eyeing James

Several teams are reportedly in contention to sign James, including the Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, and Cavaliers. Each team is expected to present a compelling case to attract the player. The Cavaliers’ pitch may focus on his origins in Northeast Ohio, suggesting a return to where his career began. The Heat could emphasize his two championship wins with the team, his known affection for the city, and the recent acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo, as well as James’ existing connections with coach Erik Spoelstra and the front office.

The Warriors’ proposal is anticipated to highlight the opportunity to play alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, players with whom James has demonstrated chemistry. Beyond these NBA teams, various other entities have also made public appeals to James, including Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, musician DJ Khaled, the New York Jets, and the Winnipeg Jets. Even the PGA Tour has attempted to engage with James, who has developed an interest in golf.

LeBron James has governors, the NHL and the NFL waiting for his free agency decision Credit: thestar.com

Some of these appeals have been lighthearted; for instance, the New York Jets noted James’ high school colours matched theirs, while the Winnipeg Jets offered to change their name to the LeWinnipeg Jets. The Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers also posted messages, with the Bills stating, “Never say never.” However, a person familiar with James’ plans indicated that his agent would primarily be meeting with actual NBA teams.

Impact of James’ Decision

James continues to perform at an All-Star level. He has been responsible for 17 of the 24 instances where a player in their 40s scored 30 or more points in an NBA game, including playoffs. In the 2024-25 season, he averaged 24.4 points, and in the most recent season, he averaged 20.9 points, even when often being the third offensive option for the Lakers. This contrasts with the historical average of players over 40, none of whom have averaged more than 15 points per game in a season.

The city that ultimately signs James is expected to experience an immediate surge in activity. Season ticket packages are likely to be quickly purchased, and his next jersey is anticipated to be a top seller. His Lakers jersey was the fifth-hottest seller in the league at the end of the past regular season, based on sales from NBAStore.com, Fanatics.com, and Fanatics partner sites. His decision is also expected to instill a belief among fans in the chosen city that their team has a real chance at the 2027 NBA title. The timing of James’ final decision remains unknown.

By Noah Lavoie — 1 July 2026 — 3 min read

France continued its strong performance in the World Cup, securing a 3-0 victory against Sweden. The match, held in East Rutherford, New Jersey, saw Kylian Mbappé score two goals, contributing to his record in World Cup knockout rounds. Bradley Barcola added another goal for France.

This win sets up a match against Paraguay for France. The team has been noted for its order and dominance in a tournament that has otherwise seen many games decided by narrow margins and late goals. France entered the competition as a favourite, a perception that has strengthened over the past three weeks.

Dominant Performance and Key Players

France‘s performance against Sweden was described as their most menacing yet, dismantling a team that included several Premier League players. France recorded 25 shots on Sweden‘s goal, with 12 on target. Mbappé‘s two goals in this match increased his total to 18 goals in 18 World Cup games, placing him one goal behind Lionel Messi‘s career scoring record. Mbappé now holds the record for most World Cup knockout goals, surpassing previous records held by Leonidas and Ronaldo.

Michael Olise played a pivotal role as a playmaker, with his movements across the field creating numerous opportunities. Thierry Henry, a French icon, previously described Olise as France‘s “Most Important Player.” Olise has accumulated five assists in this World Cup. His contributions were highlighted by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who noted Olise‘s ability to see solutions that only a genius sees.

The supporting cast also delivered strong performances. Bradley Barcola, who started on the left flank, scored France‘s second goal from an assist by Olise. Ousmane Dembélé also contributed to the attacking play, assisting Mbappé‘s first goal. Didier Deschamps, France‘s coach, was seen bowing to Mbappé after he was substituted in the 85th minute, a gesture that underscored the striker’s importance.

Team Depth and Tournament Path

The emergence of younger players like Olise, Barcola, and Desire Doue, aged 24, 23, and 21 respectively, is part of what Deschamps calls the “oxygenation” of the French team. This influx of new talent has revitalized a squad that reached the final in Qatar but lost on penalties. Notable players like Hugo Lloris, Raphael Varane, Antoine Griezmann, and Olivier Giroud have departed the starting lineup since the 2022 final in Doha, making way for these new options.

Sweden coach Graham Potter acknowledged France‘s supremacy, stating that he had not seen a better team. He noted the quality across the pitch and the strength of their options off the bench. Viktor Gyokeres, a forward for Sweden and Arsenal, commented on France‘s dynamic play, highlighting their rotation and strong connections among players.

France‘s path in the tournament appears favourable geographically. If they reach the final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium, they will have played seven of eight games in the north-east corridor of New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Boston. Their next match is against Paraguay on Saturday in Philadelphia. The winner of that game will advance to a quarter-final. Possible semi-final opponents could include teams other than Brazil, Argentina, or England, which are only potential opponents in the final.

By Noah Lavoie — 1 July 2026 — 3 min read

The Toronto Raptors have reportedly reached an agreement to acquire Kawhi Leonard from the Los Angeles Clippers, marking a significant move for the team as it heads into the 2026-27 season. This trade signals a shift for the Raptors, who recently concluded their season after a Game 7 loss in the first round against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The deal, which reportedly came together over the past 48 hours, involves the Raptors sending Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and several future draft picks to the Clippers. The draft compensation includes unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a first-round pick swap in 2027, and second-round picks in 2030 and 2033.

Leonard, who previously played for the Raptors during the 2018-19 season and led them to an NBA championship, is reportedly expected to sign a contract extension with Toronto. This extension could be valued at approximately $126.1 million, potentially keeping the 35-year-old forward with the team through his age-37 season. He is currently set to earn $50.3 million this season.

Details of the Trade Agreement

The acquisition of Leonard follows a period where the Raptors had been exploring opportunities to bring in a high-profile player. This move was reportedly orchestrated by Raptors executive vice president and general manager Bobby Webster, who recently received a five-year contract extension.

Sources indicate that discussions intensified over the weekend, with an initial impasse on Sunday due to the Clippers’ requests for additional assets, including three first-round picks and some of the Raptors’ young players. The Raptors reportedly declined requests for Collin Murray-Boyles and Ja’Kobe Walter, and later for Jamal Shead.

The player compensation ultimately settled on Ingram, a 2025 all-star, and Dick, a 2023 first-round pick who had seen reduced playing time with the Raptors. Ingram averaged 21.5 points and 5.6 rebounds in his single season with Toronto, while Dick averaged 9.2 points and 2.5 rebounds over his first three NBA seasons.

Leonard, a seven-time All-NBA selection and two-time Defensive Player of the Year, averaged 27.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.9 steals on 50.5 percent shooting from the field, including 38.7 percent from three-point range, in his last season. His previous stint with the Raptors included memorable moments such as ‘The Shot’ against the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 7 of the second round and a fast-break dunk over Giannis Antetokounmpo in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Impact and Future Outlook

The return of Leonard is expected to significantly impact the Raptors, who finished fifth in the Eastern Conference last season and boasted the league’s fifth-best defense with the youngest roster in the playoffs. His all-NBA level play is anticipated to elevate the team’s performance, particularly alongside players like Scottie Barnes.

The move also places increased pressure on Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic, who will be expected to deliver results. Rajakovic is reportedly anticipated to receive a contract extension soon. The development of Barnes, who earned second-team all-defense recognition in his fifth season and averaged 24.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 8.6 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.7 blocks in the playoffs, will also be crucial for the team’s success.

The presence of Alex McKechnie, the Raptors’ vice president of player health and performance, is also noted as a factor, given his previous work with Leonard during the 2018-19 season. McKechnie, a 74-year-old Scottish-born physiotherapist, worked closely with Leonard following his injury-related departure from the San Antonio Spurs.

While the acquisition of Leonard brings significant potential, it also carries risks, particularly concerning his injury history. However, the Raptors’ decision reflects a clear intention to compete at a high level in an Eastern Conference where the New York Knicks are the defending champions.
